Patrick sat in his easy chair and stared out the living room window, avoiding eye contact with either Sheriff Hal Barker or Police Chief Aaron Cameron. “I know you think I’ve been duped. But something about this feels wrong. I just can’t put my finger on it.”

“Mr. Bailey,” Hal said, “I understand how hard this must be for you. But Chief Cameron and I can’t change the fact that the keys were Tully Hollister’s and the stolen bicycle had his fingerprints on it. We need to dust Angie’s room and the garage for prints. I think we’ll find a match.”

“It still doesn’t prove she was involved in anything shady.”

“It’s a good start,” Hal said. “After the anonymous phone calls I got, I have good cause to be suspicious.”

“Angie got a call, too, don’t forget.”

“That’s what she said.”

“I saw her face after she finally came out with it. She looked rattled.”

“Rattled is relative, Mr. Bailey It could’ve meant anything.”

“Could’ve meant she was confused and scared–just like she said.”

“I’m sorry. The chief and I have no choice but to consider Angie as a possible accessory to the murder of Johnny Lee Sawyer. And how much either of them did or didn’t know about the rattlesnakes remains to be seen.”

“Are you going to go through her things, too?”

Chief Cameron finally spoke. “We have a warrant and hope you’ll be cooperative. We really hate this.”

Patrick got up and stood at the picture window. He saw three squad cars parked out front and a police officer and two sheriff’s deputies standing next to his pink dogwood tree. “Do what you have to.”

The telephone rang. Patrick excused himself and hurried to the kitchen to answer it. “Hello.”

“Mr. Bailey, it’s Rudy.”

“This isn’t a good time, I’ve got—”

“Remember that loose end I wanted to tie up?”

“Uh—yes, Rudy I’m a little distracted at the moment. Did you find something?”

“Did I ever. Hold on to your hat!”
